Prepare for Advent!

Our theme this year for Advent is “Hope is dawning." New hope comes to us in the person of Jesus Christ whose birth we celebrate and who promises to bring us peace.

We pray that in all of the Advent & Christmas events and opportunities at St. Monica, you will find food for the soul and a respite for your lives as you prepare to celebrate Christmas. We hope you will join us!

Mercy from the Manger

We encourage you to pick up a copy of Mercy from the Manger a collection of quotes and reflections from Pope Francis. Prepare spiritually for the coming of Christ! During the especially hectic Advent and Christmas seasons, this book will help busy people achieve their goal of enriching their personal prayer life. Available at Holy Grounds while supplies last.

Outreach

We have several holiday outreach activities in which you can participate.  This is a great way to show God's mercy to others who have less.

Adopt-a-Family
For over 20 years, St. Monica parishioners have adopted families from the St. Joseph Center by providing the families with a holiday dinner and gifts either by donating funds or by shopping for requested items. Adopt-a-Family sign-ups will be held Saturday, November 26 through Sunday, December 4. Please deliver your unwrapped gifts by Sunday, December 11. You can also adopt a family with a cash donation by Sunday, December 11 by either writing a check or making a donation online at  stmonica.net/ministrydonations. Be sure to designate your gift to "Adopt-a-Family."

at or (310) 566-1531 for more information.

Angel Toy Drive
Each year St. Monica collects toys for local schools (Muir, Grant, Edison, McKinley, Will Rogers) and Covenant House (a shelter for runaway teenagers and their babies). For many of these young people, your gift may be the only toy they receive this year. Toy Drive Angel Ornaments (with a child’s sex and age) are available beginning November 27 in the Duval Center through December 4. Please take an angel, purchase a toy, and place it unwrapped in toy collection bins by Sunday, December 11.

at  or (310) 566-1531 for more information.

Be An Elf!
Help us collect and sort donated gifts by age, gender, and specifi c requests; and compile gift packages for children in local schools on Sunday, December 11 and December 18-20.

at  or (310) 566-1531 if you can serve on any of those days.

El Hogar
Our El Hogar Ministry invites you to be a Pajama and Shoe Angel this year! Your gift will be shared with the children of the El Hogar Orphanage in Tijuana. Provide a child or teen with a new pair of pajamas or pair of shoes. You can select the child you wish to help by coming to the Duval Center after Mass during the weekends of December 3-4 and 10 -11.

Also, join the ministry on its trip to Tijuana to deliver the presents and celebrate “Little Christmas” on Saturday, January 6.  Get more details and sign up at stmonica.net/elhogar

#GivingTuesday

After you do your Christmas shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, don’t forget to give back to those in need on #GivingTuesday, November 29. St. Monica is excited to participate in #GivingTuesday as an additional way to give to our Holiday Outreach fund, which feeds the needy, buys toys for children, and supports our nonprofit partners during the Christmas season. Our #GivingTuesday goal is to raise $10,000 in 24 hours. Learn more about how you can participate at stmonica.net/givingtuesday

Holy Cross Africa Ministry
St. James School is an oasis of hope in the community of Dandora, Kenya, where more than 75% of the population lives on less than a dollar a day. The school provides a safe learning environment for more than 600 of Dandora’s most vulnerable. This Christmas season, give the gift of education by becoming a scholarship sponsor. Provide these children with the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty! Visit our tables after Mass in the Duval Center December 3–4 and 10–11 for more information or contact St. Monica Africa Ministry Education committee at .

Loaves & Fishes
Each month St. Monica sponsors a food drive to help stock the pantries of three local food banks. In the month of December, our donations go to the Westside Food Bank, which serves over 50 shelters and organizations on the Westside. Pick up a Loaves & Fishes bag on December 4 in the Duval Patio, and return it filled on December 11 to one of the donation bins.

Helping the Homeless Locally

• PATH: December 4
• Samoshel: December 11
• St. Robert’s Center: December 31 & January 1

Religious Education Advent Workshop
On Sunday, December 4, the younger children enrolled in our Religious Education program will make cards and holiday decorations for Nazareth House, an assisted living facility, and our homebound parishioners while the older children will make lunches that will be delivered to St. Robert’s Center for distribution to the homeless. These activities provide an opportunity for the children to give back to our community. It’s also a wonderful reminder to maintain the spirit of joy and peace in the rush of the season.

St. Joseph Center Holiday Party
On Saturday, December 17, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., St. Monica will host the annual St.
Joseph Center Holiday Party. Our auditorium will become a hub of energy as over 400 children and their parents enjoy carnival games, a tasty lunch, music, an exciting raffle, and a visit from Santa! We need help with hospitality, parking, running games and craft projects, serving food, and taking photos.

Las Posadas on December 19
Las Posadas is the novena of preparation for the feast of the Nativity, a Hispanic tradition in which the community gathers every night on the nine evenings before Christmas with a re-enactment and short play (presented by children) of Joseph and Mary visiting the inn to ask for a place to stay. This year, the Tri-Parish community of Santa Monica will celebrate together at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19, at St. Monica. Traditional Mexican food will be part of the evening. All are welcome!
