About Our Program

We offer a comprehensive program of religious education classes for children ages three through grade 8 that meets throughout the school year. Our program includes sacramental preparation for Eucharist (First Holy Communion) and Reconciliation (Confession), a family-based program where parents are required to attend parent sessions while their children are preparing. Students in the 2nd grade prepare for the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation as part of their regular religious education classes.

We also provide a special sacrament preparation program for children in grades 3 and above who are new to St. Monica and have not yet received Eucharist and/or Reconciliation, a separate fellowship for grades 6-8, and a separate program for teens in grades 9-12, Always Confirming,  that includes preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation.

If you would like to support this ministry and families who are unable to afford it, consider making a gift!  Be sure to designate your gift to "Religious Education."

Formation for the Whole Family

We also offer special sessions, grade level family retreats, resources, and faith formation programs throughout the entire year, designed to include parent participation to help strengthen the faith life of the whole family including our Parent Faith@Home Series. Also as part of our program, all grade levels participate in the VIRTUS® Teaching Touching Safety Program for Children as mandated by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Through our program, we hope that families will come to a fuller and richer experience of the presence of God in their lives and grow in their mission of being Christ's disciples in our world.

Please note: All volunteers who work with children and teens in any capacity at St. Monica are required by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to complete the VIRTUS Training session, “Protecting God’s Children,” and be fingerprinted with a background check. They cannot enter a classroom as a primary catechist until this process is completed.  This includes all volunteers and catechists in our Religious Education Program and our Confirmation program for teens. Early Childhood

Classes meet weekly on Sundays after the 9:30 a.m. Mass from 10:45 to 11:50.

Begins October 2, 2016 through May 7, 2017
The program is designed to support parents in educating their children about the Catholic faith through a variety of age-appropriate activities which will 1) help children create an awareness of God, 2) provide an atmosphere of belonging to a faith community, 3) let them know that God loves them, and 4) help parents deepen their faith commitment through this experience.

Twice a month the parents are expected to participate in classes with family style activities and fun! All classes are taught by volunteers who are continually working on their faith formation and some are certified through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Grades 1-5

Classes meet weekly on Sundays after the 9:30 a.m. Mass from 10:45 to 11:50.

Begins September 25, 2016 through May 21, 2017

Through the stages of the elementary years, we offer a formation process that grows along with the children. We begin with the basics of understanding who God is, followed by preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, and continue through the elementary ages learning Scripture, prayer, and various Church teachings. Each grade level will have a Family Retreat in place of a scheduled class time. Our catechists are continually working on their faith formation and some are certified through the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
