Babies under the age of one are at a risk of choking but handling a blocked airway in such a young child requires a different approach. If the baby cannot cough, cry, or breathe, support him “face down” by holding the head in one hand with the torso on your forearm, against your thigh. Give up to five back thumps between the shoulder blades with the heel of your other hand. If this does not work, roll the infant face up and provide five chest thrusts, about 1 ½ inches deep, with two fingers on the breastbone, just below the nipple line.
