Since 2002 St. Monica Catholic Community has been engaged in a sister relationship with Holy Cross Parish in Dandora, Kenya, creating avenues of mutual support and opportunities for prayer and service for and with one another. The Holy Cross Africa Ministry team coordinates various activities throughout the year including speaker nights, fundraising events, prayer and worship experiences in order to raise awareness and advocate for the spiritual, educational, and health needs of our sister parish.
When making your gift be sure to designate it to Holy Cross Africa Ministry.
The mission of St. Monica Holy Cross Africa Ministry is to share, pray, learn and join with our sister parish, Holy Cross Dandora, in their mission to “humanize city life and help people recognize their God given dignity” (Rev. Bob Dowd, CSC)
Our Holy Cross Africa Ministry offers a wide variety of ways that you can participate in the ministry including collecting educational supplies for students, marketing African merchandise & running in the L.A. Marathon for HIV/ AIDs patients, and traveling to Dandora as an ambassador of St. Monica. We have something for everyone! If you are interested, follow up with the contacts listed for each committee.
The mission of the Holy Cross Africa Ministry Education Committee is to support scholarship students and their families in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty. Donations fund scholarships for over 30 disadvantaged, yet promising youths in the Dandora community. The scholarships cover tuition, books, and meals for Nursery and Primary Schools. Our scholarship commitment to these children extends all the way through high school.
We also provide full scholarships to men and women who attend the Vocational Tailoring School at Holy Cross Parish. The three-year program for tailoring students teaches a trade that allows them to seek quality employment and provide a better life for their families.
In addition to scholarships, donations from St. Monica parishioners have provided funding for books, education supplies, projectors, sewing machines and so much more!
We look forward to continuing our partnership with our brothers and sisters in Dandora in an effort to provide a high quality education in a safe learning environment. If you are interested in supporting this mission through donations or otherwise, please contact our Education Committee at
Located on the property of Holy Cross parish Veronika’s Place has been providing food for 400 men, women and children with HIV/AIDS in the local community of Dandora. Named in memory of Veronika Lineberry Manzella donations to this fund provide people with the nutrition they need to receive the most benefit from their medications.
Through Race 4 Veronika’s Place, an official charity program of the 2014 ASICS LA Marathon, the ministry has been able to raise the necessary funds for the program in the last two years and welcome anyone interested in participating in or raising funds for the marathon.
The ministry organizes trips to visit our sister parish in Dandora, Kenya, offering parishioners an opportunity to meet face to face with our brothers and sisters, witnessing the progress of joint projects, and participation in prayer and worship activities together. So far, over 170 St. Monica travelers have experienced the beauty of Kenya and the faith of her people.
Each year our parish travelers bring back wonderful crafts, treasures and handmade gifts from Kenya – in fact, many of the items are handmade by the Dandora Catholic Handcraft Group, the local trades association at our sister parish, Holy Cross Church. We sell these items a few times a year after Masses at St. Monica, with all proceeds benefitting Holy Cross Dandora Parish. We invite you to get involved in any of the following ways: marketing and arranging the items, helping with after-Mass sales, and giving feedback about the types of crafts to bring back next time.
The Faith and Culture Committee supports the preparation of our travelers to Kenya every year. The Committee prepares a beautiful travel journal for the travelers to Kenya that includes the Gospels for every day of the trip, journal questions to enrich our experience, and reflections from past travelers to Dandora from St. Monica. The Committee also offers a presentation before the trip to help prepare the travelers for what they would experience and to understand how our work there fits within the larger landscape of Catholic social teaching.
The HCAM Medical Committee works to develop sustainable health care at our sister Parish, Holy Cross, in Dandora, Kenya. By providing medical supplies and sharing of medical knowledge and technology, we strive to improve health outcomes at the Brother Andre Dispensary.
The Building Committee of HCAM supports infrastructure projects at Holy Cross Parish. In the past, the Building Committee has sponsored the building of classrooms at St. James School and the drilling of a borehole to create a well that provides fresh water to thousands of residents of Dandora. (dedicated in 2006).
Most recently a special campaign, Hope in Common, Hope in Christ, was conducted to help raise the roof of a long awaited new second Church in Dandora, a top priority of parish leadership in Dandora. We are proud to partner with Holy Cross Mission Center at Notre Dame to help build this new church for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Dandora.
