The holiday season kicks off in fall with our annual Thanksgiving Dinner and Clothing Boutique. Started in 1979, this celebration is a wonderful way to share a holiday of abundance with those in need. Learn more about how you can participate or make a donation at www.stmonica.net/thanksgiving.
We then enter into the season of Advent as we prepare to celebrate Christmas. As part of our Advent outreach, St. Monica (1) collaborates with the St. Joseph Center Family Program to ensure that their families have a holiday dinner, a family gift, and toys for their children, (2) conducts a toy drive for local children in need, and (3) hosts a holiday party for the families from the St. Joseph Center. Read below to learn more!
Donate a new toy by Sunday, December 11! During each Advent season, St. Monica hosts the Angel Toy Drive, which provides Christmas toys and gifts to local children and teenagers in need. The toys are delivered to local schools and agencies and may be the only Christmas gifts that the children receive. Over the past few years, we have donated toys to Beyond Shelter, Harvest Home, Covenant House, Share the Holidays (in conjunction with Police Activities League and the Santa Monica Fire Department), and the following Santa Monica elementary schools: Edison, Grant, John Muir, McKinley, and Will Rogers.
Being a part of this important effort is both easy and fulfilling. During the drive, simply bring an unwrapped toy or gift for a child or teenager to St. Monica and leave it in the donation bins. To help you remember to bring your donation, we can provide you with a reminder angel-just stop by the Duval Center after Mass in late November or early December to pick an angel off the tree.
Volunteers Welcome! We need help with preparing the angel reminders, passing them out after Masses, and sorting the toys (on Sundays and during the week). Any time that you can contribute would be much appreciated!
We especially need help with toy sorting on Sunday, December 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
For over 20 years, St. Monica has teamed with the St. Joseph Center in Venice to provide over 300 families with a family household gift, gift certificates for a holiday meal, and presents for the children. This ministry is a very tangible way to share your joy and gratitude during the Christmas season. Our St. Joseph Center families include anywhere from one to ten individuals, all of whom would benefit from your generosity.
Thanks to all of our thoughtful and generous supporters, all of our 2016 St. Joseph Center families have been adopted! Because of your generosity, 300 families (composed of 940 people) will be celebrating the holidays with a delicious dinner and gifts.
If you have adopted a family and still need to send in your contribution, or if you would like more information about how you can still support the St. Joseph Center this holiday season, please contact Christine at or 310-566-1531.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Check back next November for ways to support and get involved with Adopt a Family 2017.
Come volunteer and be a part of a joyful community celebration on Saturday, December 17! St. Monica hosts an annual holiday party for the Family Center of the St. Joseph Center each year during Advent. For many of our St. Joseph Center families, this party is their main way of celebrating the holidays with their community, so it is a very anticipated event.
Our auditorium becomes a hub of energy, laughs, and smiles as children and their parents enjoy carnival games (face painting and ornament making to a snowman toss), a tasty lunch, spirited music, an exciting raffle, and a visit from Santa himself! Last year we hosted over 400 guests, and we anticipate even more this year!
If you would like to be a registered volunteer, then please contact Christine. We’ll need help with providing hospitality, guiding parking, running carnival games and arts & crafts projects, serving food, and taking photos.
Please note: Because this event is very well attended and we are hosting it for St. Joseph Center, you may only attend if you are a registered volunteer. Thank you for your understanding.
