Recently, our YMA Peace and Justice group held their first event since restrictions were lifted for LA County. Young adult volunteers assembled hygiene kits that will be shared with patrons of the St. Robert's Center Weekend Food Pantry on July 24. Participants expressed a desire to be part of the solution to the homelessness crisis and to find ways to safeguard human dignity within our community.
Laura Reilly, YMA Peace and Justice Co-chair, shared “This event forms part of a larger outreach effort to uplift the most vulnerable—our neighbors— those living on the streets. As a ministry, we are dedicated to providing young adults the chance to serve as the hands and feet of Christ, growing in fellowship while supporting the social causes they care about.”
Co-chair Mary Mariano continues, “It felt amazing to see everyone's joyous and smiling faces as we sorted and packed toiletry kits for the homeless. One thing I can acknowledge for myself is certainly how grateful I was this weekend, to be in a room full of people with a goal to help those that are in most need in our community. We were together, more connected, and working beside each other for a good cause - quite literally now and not through zoom. This past year has certainly taught me that we are all part of a community that leads to help and care for those that need it the most.”
Young adults in their 20’s and 30’s wanting to serve those in need are encouraged to join up with the YMA Peace and Justice Team. Ms. Reilly shares “As a ministry, we are dedicated to providing young adults the chance to serve as the hands and feet of Christ, growing in fellowship while supporting the social causes they care about. The Peace and Justice team is looking forward to deepening our impact through future events in the coming months.” Contact them at .
The St. Robert Center Weekend Food Pantry located in Venice distributes meals, toiletries, clothing and groceries to needy families and the homeless in our community on Saturdays. The St. Robert’s Center fills a very critical need in our area—since its inception many years ago, the St. Robert’s Center is the only weekend food pantry on the Westside.
