Children, by nature, give and seek physical affection — hugs, pats on the arm or leg, even kisses. It is the responsibility of adults to know what is and is not appropriate when it comes to responding to this need for physical affection. One tip to consider is the acronym PAN, meaning touch that is public, appropriate, and non-sexual. This could include high fives, side hugs, back pats, and other displays of affection that reaffirm an emotional connection without crossing the child’s personal boundaries.
