If a child tells you about sexual abuse, the first and most important step to take is to listen to him or her. Let the child fully express the situation and how he or she is feeling. It’s important to be aware that children may not always disclose abuse in clear terms. Let the child know that you are listening, and that you believe him or her. Remind him or her of how brave it is to disclose this, and that you will help. Report any suspicion of abuse to authorities. For more tips, visit https://lacatholics.org/reporting-child-abuse/ and read the VIRTUS® article “When a Child Discloses” at https://www.virtusonline.org/virtus/free_article.cfm?free_articles_id=1673.
