Domestic violence has many forms, including emotional, financial, physical, and sexual abuse. Research on children who live in homes with domestic violence shows that there can be long-standing consequences to a child’s health. Twenty-six states have passed laws protecting children who witness domestic violence. Children who grow up seeing violence between parents often struggle in their own relationships later in life. The single greatest predictor of whether children will grow up to be perpetrators of domestic violence is whether they witness it themselves as children.
