Non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) abuse can affect anyone, regardless of age or gender. In many cases, it can seem like the victim is part of the distribution of his or her own image. Even though a child may provide an intimate picture, children are not capable of understanding the implications or coping with perceived pressure to do so. No matter how an offender obtains intimate material, the victim’s fear of images being shared can leave him or her feeling powerless and ashamed. NCII abuse can be used to further manipulate or blackmail a victim into more abusive scenarios. For more information, read the VIRTUS® article “The Take It Down Act” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.
