Called to Serve is a one-day, parishwide retreat on Saturday, October 22nd. Each small group will spend the morning assisting at a food pantry, shelter, or non-profit organization benefiting the vulnerable communities of Los Angeles. Afterward, groups will meet back at St. Monica’s Grand Pavilion for lunch, reflection, and conversation about service, humility, and what it means to love in deed and in truth. 

This event is open to parishioners of all ages.  We will have a family track for Elementary & Middle school aged kids, which will require a parent/ guardian to attend with them.  High school students may attend independently with a signed permission slip.   

Sampling of Volunteer sites:

Harvest Home:
Westside Infant Family Network is running a community outreach event for families to come and “shop” from Harvest Home’s available donations.  * Some moderate lifting may be required at this location. 

West Side Food Bank:

We will be sorting food donations that will later be distributed to families in need. * Some moderate lifting may be required at this location. 

St Roberts Center: 

The Saturday Food Program at St. Robert’s serves the low-income families and homeless population of Venice Beach and the Westside of LA. We will be making sandwiches and distribute clothing and groceries.

Santa Monica Beach Clean Up:

We will be helping our very own Green Team by picking up trash at the beach to keep our ocean clean. * Family track available

St Monica Thanksgiving Boutique:

We will be packing toiletry kits to be distributed later at our Thanksgiving Dinner for those in need. * Family track available

Habitat for Humanity ReStore:

ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell gently used and new items at 30%-70% off retail. All proceeds from ReStore sales are used to support Habitat for Humanity mission. We will be helping sort donations and stock the store * Some moderate lifting may be required at this location. 

New Directions for Veterans:

We will be assisting with gardening and painting at New Directions for Veterans, which provides housing and comprehensive services for at-risk veterans and their families.
