THE FILM CLUB
Who we are. What we do.
Cinema lovers, we’re the Film Club. We welcome you to our screenings held monthly from September to May. We present a wide variety of films from different genres. Our members say that watching a film together—even if they’ve already seen it—followed by a lively discussion, affords an entirely different and enriched experience. Some people liken our get-togethers to a book club, offering camaraderie and shared perspectives.
Each season, our films touch on a broad and meaningful topic. Our 2018-2019 films will focus on personal transformation. Join us for our coming films to explore their deeper meaning and to discuss how each film intersects with our faith.
In addition to seven onsite screenings, our annual calendar includes two special events: Oscar Night (where we discuss and vote on contenders) and Go-to-the-Movies Night (where we join together to discuss a film currently showing in the theaters). There is a donation for attending each screening to cover the cost of refreshments and film rights. (We show films under a license agreement with CVLI.) The per-screening donation is $10 ($5 for seniors and students). Through our first screening in September, we also offer a seasonal EZ Pass that’s $60 ($40 for seniors and students.)
UPCOMING EVENT
Gravity: A perilous voyage to inner peace
It’s time to “launch” the Film Club’s 2018-2019 season. How appropriate—we’re heading to outer space! We’ll be screening 2014’s multiple award-winning, thrilling and breathtaking sci-fi film, Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Make no mistake about it: The film’s landmark cinematography isn’t the whole story. Critic Roger Ebert summed it up, “For all its stunning exteriors, it's really concerned with emotional interiors, and it goes about exploring them with simplicity and directness.” Our journey begins in the Grand Pavilion on Thursday, September 13. Doors open for check-in and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. sharp; screening at 7 p.m.; discussion afterward led by Father David Guffey, CSC, and Director of Family Theater Productions. We request a per-screening donation of $10 or $5 (seniors/students) to cover the cost of refreshments and film rights. (We show films under a license agreement with CVLI.)
Make it EZ on yourself
Why not get an annual EZ prepaid seasonal pass and skip-the-line at the Film Club? The donation is: $60—or $40 (age 65 and students). Buy your pass HERE through September 12, at the Caruso Center front desk through the same date, or at the first screening on September 13 when you check-in. Checks should be made out to St. Monica Catholic Community and in memo write Film Club.
