Film Club Goes to the Stars and Back!

Film Club goes to the stars and backWhat a way to launch the new year for Film Club! Over 70 guests took an intergalactic journey led by Fr. David Guffey, CSC, to explore and reflect on the cinematic treasure, Star Wars — A New Hope. Even though many in the multigenerational audience had previously seen the film, Fr. David suggested that we view the movie with new eyes, with a “Catholic imagination,” so that we could look beyond the film’s cinematic merit and reach a deeper appreciation of its meaning, insights and spiritual truths.

Following the screening, breakout groups and a general session provided ample opportunity to discuss the film. Guests reflected on topics such as personal callings, the forces of good and evil, heroism, 20260117 100530 mj volunteertransformation, mentorship, and the personal resources needed to meet the challenges of life. The conversations were rich, insightful and rewarding.

This film and others shared at Film Club events are chosen since we consider them to be “screenings with meaning.” The films may not be explicitly religious; but each provides a springboard to open a dialogue about living our faith in the world around us.

The next Film Club event will be the annual Oscar Night on March 12 in the Grand Pavilion and on Zoom. The night will include commentary by Fr. David on the 10 films nominated for Best Picture, trailers, opinion sharing and a vote for our top picture of the year. Registration opens soon on the Film Club web page.
